On September 7, 1859, a truly massive Solar Storm, called the Carrington Event, hit the Earth, causing aurora bright enough to read newspapers after midnight, and strong magnetic fields caused telegraph lines to emit several inch-long sparks. When a storm this size hits the earth again, it could destroy satellites, ground air transports and possibly destroy our communications networks and our power grids. It could take several years or longer to replace the destroyed large power transformers, and a civilization without electricity could be the end of civilization as we know it. We will discuss how the sun generates energy, solar storms and their affect on the Earth and its magnetic field. We will also cover the upcoming flip of the planetary magnetic field and how this makes us more vulnerable to solar storms.
